Just Another Cute Picture

I love Davy's inquisitive look in this picture. When he's awake he is so curious and ready to soak up every new thing. He loves being held and carried around the house with us, even if to us it seems as though we're not doing anything interesting. He just wants to be where we are, and where the action is.

Maple Sugaring

On Saturday we took a nice drive out to Moose Hill in Sharon, MA to experience some maple sap harvesting and syrup making. We got to take a nice nature hike through the country side, hear the Native American legend of how maple syrup was discovered, taste maple sugar and maple syrup, visit a sugar shack where the sap is boiled down into syrup, and learn what a sugar bush is (a grove of maple trees growing close together that are all in the process of being tapped for sap).


It was a little chilly, but we had bundled Davy up and brought several warm blankets. He was so adorable, just peeking out of the blanket folds, trying to see what was going on!

Rolling Over

Davy must be going through a growth spurt, as he is eating (at least it seems to Rachel) constantly. He had been sleeping through the night consistently 7 1/2 and even 8 and nine hours, but the past few nights has been up again every couple to nurse. Luckily Rachel can still "sleep when the baby is sleeping" or at least relax a lot during the day. And Collin sleeps right through everything. Thanks, Garrett, for training him to sleep through any commotion!

And then today, Rachel put David on his stomach for a little "tummy time," turned around to grab a bite of sandwich, turned back around and saw Davy on his back. He was making noises like, "how did I get here?" While this first time of rolling over may have been an accident, it definitely marks a milestone! Pretty exciting! Too bad no one was an eye-witness. Oh, well. I'm sure there will be plenty more rolling over in days to come.

Last night we looked at a chart for baby milestones that had columns of "every baby should be able to . . . ," "about half of babies can . . . ," "advanced skills (a few babies can) . . ." Davy is highly advanced for his age and we are already planning his graduation from Harvard at age 19.

Truly, we are enjoying the little moments of smiling and quiet before the days of chasing Davy around and endless chatter. We look forward to those too, but for now we'll enjoy where we're at!

Tummy Time

Collin and Rachel keep talking about being more healthy--eating fewer desserts, eating less in general, doing more sit-ups and push-ups, etc. However, the last time Rachel did sit-ups she was sore for two days and lost motivation to do any more. And last night for FHE Collin made an ice cream run because we were out. Because we'd eaten the last bit of a previous carton the night before. So really the only healthy person in our house--the only one doing lots of exercising and eating the perfect amount--is Davy. This week he is enjoying trying out his legs by doing lots of standing/squatting reps. He also has got the hang of "tummy time" and can hold his head up pretty well to look around and even has energy and coordination enough to smile! So we'll just let Davy grow and exercise while we watch and eat ice cream cones on the couch.

We Got a Piano!

We've been looking for a cheap (<$200) piano for the past couple of weeks and had decided to give up until the "moving season" when all of the college students go back home and there's tons of good, free furniture available. However, we got an email on Friday from a man who had wanted to sell us his piano for $100. He said no one else had contacted him since we had, and he was just going to give it to charity anyway, so we could have it for free!

With the help of three friends from the ward, we successfully moved it the 10 miles to our apartment on a U-haul truck. It only took an hour to get it out of the owner's house, down the road, and into ours, which is pretty good for a New England piano move. It's not tuned yet, and it's no beauty, but we've already been finding ourselves sitting down to it every now and then, pounding out a few inharmonious tunes. We're excited to use it for learning new pieces and teaching Davy primary songs.

Thinking of Spring

Spring is thinking about coming here. There'll probably be at least one more big showing of winter, but there are some signs of spring. Like being able to step outside without feeling like you're hitting a wall of ice. We took a walk to the library today. It was a gorgeous day, and even though we still bundled up David enough, he was able to soak in some Vitamin D from the sun because his face wasn't completely covered by blankets.



This picture documents the last time Davy will be able to wear Rachel's favorite onesie. He's quite the cowboy in his faded jeans and horsey paraphernalia!



Although he still holds his hands with fists closed and up toward his chest like a newborn (or a rabbit), Davy has begun to open and use his hands. It is so sweet the way he gracefully moves his hand around, like conducting an orchestra. His long fingers make his little gestures seem so elegant! He can reach out deliberately to move his toys around (when they are dangling from the little play canopy) and has even started to try to grasp them. He loves holding mom's hand, when nursing or when he is bored or tired and needs attention. Don't worry that he's becoming too much a mamma's boy, though. Davy is thrilled when dad plays with him. Collin can get the best smiles, coos, and giggles from Davy.

World's Cutest Baby Contest Winner

Last week we took Davy to a studio to get his first professional pictures taken. He was not that impressed with the whole set up and wouldn't smile at all. But even serious he is pretty cute!

Cookies!!!

We finally got our $80 worth of Girl Scout Cookies. It should last us until next Girl Scout Cookie season. Probably.

Davy doing a little bit of light reading before going to bed. He's currently taken an interest in self-help books on how to deal with parents.

Rachel brought Davy out in this warm suit when we were all going for a walk one day. Collin couldn't help but think of two things:

(1) "I'm Gumby!"

(2) "Mom, I can't put my arms down!" (Think A Christmas Story)

We tried giving Collin a hair cut, but it really didn't work. We got half way through and realized we aren't professional stylists. Oops!

He's a real talker now! He loves to hear himself talk!
