Tomatoes and Toes

This year we planted two tomato plants and some basil. We got several leaves of the herb and five smallish tomatoes. And I killed the tomato plants, so I have no idea how even five survived! Davy tried to remind me to water the plants more often, but I didn't listen. So he's not to blame! I think the only way the plants lived enough to produce what they did was from all the natural rain we got this summer. These pictures are during the storm Hurricane Bill brought our way a few weekends ago.

Davy isn't actually eating tomatoes yet. They're a little too acidic for him, but he still likes to try.

Davy's started to get really grumpy during diaper changes--until he's all free and can get his toes.

This past weekend we drove down to Providence, Rhode Island. We were all excited to watch a polo match, but it was canceled due to the torrential rain. So we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast at an excellent restaurant instead, and walked through an antique mall finding treasures, like the cowboy hat Davy is modeling. Davy tried his first lemon and gave us the face. He was pretty hesitant to take anything from me after that, as I had betrayed his trust. We got a video of his expression--we'll post it later.

Teeth

Davy cut his first tooth yesterday. We can't see it yet (hence the no-picture post), but we can definitely feel it. Ouch, it's sharp! And he's still working on the second bottom tooth, so he keeps trying to gum on our fingers like we've allowed before--no more of that! I'm sure as soon as we can see his new chompers we'll get a picture up for the eager grandparents and aunts and uncles.

Teething and watching TV with Dad. I don't normally let Davy watch TV (bad for the baby brain, you know), but they were so cute watching tennis together. I figure ten minutes isn't going to kill him.

Making faces for the camera:

Hanging out at the library while I use the computer to check email. Davy is a really good sport about it. I go almost every day and spend at least 20 minutes on the computer. Davy just plays happily on the floor or makes friends with the other patrons. I don't know what I'm going to do once he starts moving around, though. I guess I'll have to have Collin watch him in the evening so I can use the internet.

Davy is a smart one. The other morning I was offering him Cheerios for breakfast. He's had them before, but they are kind of tricky for him to feed himself. Animal crackers are easier, since they are bigger and easier to grip, but those little Cheerio pieces are just harder to manage. He can pick them up and get them in his mouth about half the time. The other half they end up on the floor and he gets frustrated. So after struggling for a little while with the cereal on his own, Davy finally just grabbed my hand and stuffed it and the Cheerio I was holding into his mouth. I thought it was so cute and funny that I started laughing and praised him. He got all pleased with himself, giving me a wide gummy grin.

Songs and Playtime

On Sunday afternoon Collin entertained himself by taking really long videos of Davy playing. They are each about four minutes, so only watch if you are very interested in Davy! He is pretty cute, though. And then Collin (with great reluctance and with great love for his wife) consented to have the lullaby he wrote for Davy be recorded. Please enjoy!

Silly Baby!

These are some snap shots of the antics Davy was up to last week. They were taken with my cell phone, so the quality isn't that great. But you get the idea!

He's on the move! He scoots backward--mostly still on accident, I think. I'm glad he usually gets stuck on the leg of the couch instead of all the way under. Confession: I don't vacuum under the couch as often as I should, although I may have to more now!

I don't know where he got his flexible genes--not from me or Collin! I suppose all babies are flexible, but I'm still pretty impressed at this reach. We took the pacifier away last week (I was getting too attatched to it . . .) and Davy and I (and Collin) have been adjusting just fine. That void has created more need for sucking on fingers--and toes!--though, which is okay with me.

Georges Island, Boston Harbor

Davy's a big boy in the bath tub, now. He can sit up well enough on his own, that even being slippery it's still safe enough (for the paranoid, over-protective mom). You can see that he likes bath time a lot!

Friday we went on a ferry to Georges Island, which is in Boston Harbor. We had to wait for a while on the wharf for the boat to come, so Davy showed Dad how much he loves him by attacking him with kisses and nose bites.

It was Davy's first ferry ride and he loved every minute! He liked watching the wake left by the boat and hearing the loud engine and splashing waves.

The island has a fort named Fort Warren built in 1850 during the Civil War, but the island was used for defense long before that, in the Revolutionary War. It was really cool to explore, and there are even some ghost stories about the place. There is one place called the Black Tunnel that is actually pitch black that you can walk through and feel just like Indiana Jones. It has that old smell and everything (you know the musty one, that the Disneyland ride tries to manufacture).

Davy never ceases to be entertained by this game he has created for himself. He will endlessly pull Dad's face around to see if it's still there!
