Dalemain House, Penrith (sister trip)

Wednesday afternoon Katy and I dropped off Eliza at a friend's house and headed off on an adventure of our own.  Collin picked up Eliza and the boys from school and took care of things at home for a few days so we sisters could tour the Lake District and Edinburgh.  It was so fun!!  Katy and I took the tube out to the airport and navigated ourselves to the rental car place and through the rental car process.  I felt like I was pretending to be a grown up, as I'd never been at the car rental counter myself.  But all went relatively smoothly and we were soon driving up the country to the Lake District.

We made a detour that, in hindsight, was not very smart, seeing as we hit traffic and the sun had long gone down by the time we got to Bronte country.  I had wanted to see where the Bronte family lived in the moors, but in the end we just drove by something in the dark and laughed hysterically as the GPS kept driving us by Butt Lane.  Maybe you had to be there, but I almost lost it laughing so hard.  I'd been sick with a killer cold and lost my voice, so my laugh was hoarse and I really couldn't breath right, so Katy was laughing at that as well.  Anyway, sisters.  We disagreed and I'm sure I disappointed her, but in the end we just forgive and have laugh attacks about random things.

The next morning we explored a most enchanting estate called Dalemain House.  It's still a family home and real people live there, in addition to all the stories of its past lives.  The house was lovely (no photos allowed--but I wish I could have had at least one of the bright pink entry way with old paintings all around because it worked in a most surprising way) but the gardens were remarkable.  And I've seen lots of English gardens this past year.  I especially loved the formal garden with the view over the more organic fields.  I felt very inspired and took dozens of pictures, even though my children were not around.

There was a children's garden with cute animal signs telling the names of plants, like Cow Parsley and Lamb's Ear.  There were lovely alcoves and secret garden doors.  And so many flowers!

The stable yard was one of my favorite places.  It seemed vaguely familiar, and I learned later that one of the Jane Eyre movie versions used the stable yard as a location.

Down by the little bubbling stream was a perfectly magical place, with a tree house lookout, a little child-sized cottage, a sleeping dragon and slumbering giant.  I wish I could have seen my children play there.

We were reluctant to leave--ever--but eventually had to.  As we walked down the lane toward the parking lot an old Scotsman motioned us to come over and feed his deer.  Intrigued we followed the gamekeeper (like a very miniature Hagrid!) to his deer.  He let us feed them bread.  They were shy, except one who was very bossy and forward.  Then I turned around and he had given Katy a handful of birdseed and he was calling down the little finches from the trees to come eat from her palm.  I had a go and it was one of the coolest things ever!  Their little claws were a bit sharp, but it was easy to stay as still as possible so they wouldn't be frighted away.

It was a most wonderful visit.  I smile just remembering.

Harry Potter Studio

I have to say, the WB Studios Harry Potter stuff blew me away.  It was awesome.  Katy and I did not give ourselves enough time to fully enjoy it, as we had to get back to get the kids from school.  I wish I'd known it could be a whole-day event.  I hope she still had a good time, even though we had to rush the last half of the tour.  All the sets and props were so cool, and the Hogwarts Express was straight out of the movie.  We got to take our time for a photo op going through the platform (unlike at the actual Kings Cross station, where it is a mad house).  Eliza took the one of Katy, which turned out better than the one I took of her.  Go figure.

The butter beer was actually pretty good.  I found the foam on the top slightly suspicious, but it did taste good so I didn't ask any more questions about what it was made of.  The purple bus took three vintage double-deckers to create.  There were millions more things I didn't take pictures of, because I was loving seeing it all in person too much.  Plus I was chasing after Eliza.

I came home with an urgent desire to see all the movies again (and reread all the books--but I have too many others on my to-read bookshelf first).  Collin and I have been movie marathaning ever since.  The boys have now had the first book read aloud to them and seen the first movie twice.  We'll wait a few more years before going any further into the series--it gets intense!  I'm also hoping Collin and I can sneak away to the studios for a full-day date one Saturday before we leave.  I'm glad Katy had this high on her priority list, and I'm surprised how much I was converted to the experience!

Aunt Katy Comes to Visit

My sister, Katy, came to visit during Eddy's birthday celebration.  She spoiled him--and all the kids--rotten!  She had gifts for each of them for every day she was here and the loved the attention.  She explored London and caught a show, hung out after school, and spent lots of time with me and Eliza around town before doing extra fun adventures (that will comprise additional posts, naturally).

Aunt Katy treated Eliza to a pink strawberry ice cream cone that little sis was thrilled with, until she saw Aunt Katy's had a flake and suddenly hers wasn't all that cool anymore.

We wandered around Hyde Park and Eliza was our special access pass into the Peter Pan playground (you must visit with a child).

We visited Trafalgar Square and popped into the National Gallery.  Eliza was dressed adorably in a dress Katy's and my mom made for our other sister and we overheard some American tourists say, "Look, she looks just like a royal baby!"

I love having an additional reason to get out and explore this amazing city we get to call home right now.  We especially very much enjoyed the incredible lingering summer weather in the early autumn days.  London was just showing off.  That, or Katy brought the sun with her!

Date with Eliza (museum and crepes)

The big brothers had a stake Primary activity at the Hyde Park building a few weeks ago.  Eliza was stuck with us, but we tried to make the most of the two hours we had together.  The Hyde Park chapel is across the street from many of the museums in London.  We popped into the V&A for a little belly button peeking.  No really, that's what Eliza looks for.  It's adorable and innocent, so we're going for it.  :)

She looked extra cute that day, carrying around the bear in her old-fashioned outfit.  You wouldn't believe how many compliments she got from the grandparent-aged museum patrons.

Also very near is the Kensington Creperie.  We'd only heard good things about it, so had to give it a whirl.  We got one savory and two sweet, naturally.  Eliza helped out a bit on the crepes, but she was mostly interested in the cold silver bowl of ice cream.  Collin and I let her go at it and enjoyed the last few minutes of our date.
