Edward John Lambourne

Edward John Lambourne joined us as the sun was rising on Wednesday, September 29, 2010. He entered the world at 7:13 am and weighed in at a whopping 10 lbs 14 oz and measured 21 1/2 inches long. We joked that we should name him "Goliath," but ultimately Edward John won. The name was chosen in honor of my grandpa and both of Collin's grandpas. The delivery went well and all are happy, healthy, and sleep deprived.

Davy is a sweet big brother, planting large, enthusiastic kisses all over "baby Eddy." He is--for now--being extra charming and cute to get our attention.

We are thrilled with this new addition to our family!

Apple Pickin'

It's apple-picking time! When the new baby didn't come on its due date (or the day after, or the day after that), we decided it was high time we make the trip for this Massachusetts fall tradition. A friend of ours told us, "It's a great way to have fun spending way too much for an apple." Sounds like a good time to us! Plus, Kimball Farms Ice Cream was on the way home. So let's get started:

Just for reference, this is an apple.

We never knew where Davy got the furrowed brow and lower-lip pout look until this picture.

"Stop playing around boys! We're picking apples, here!"
Sorry about the sideways video.

Talking with Grandma Lambourne in California.
Thanks for the great family pics, Erica!
Too cool (or hot?) for school.

Let's Go to the Beach!

Temperatures jumped back up into the 70s and 80s this past week, so it was only fitting to take Mom Dollahite and Erica to one of the picturesque North Shore beaches. Plus, we heard walking in the sand helps induce labor . . .

Wait, is that Angelina and her new adopted child from Russia at a private Caribbean resort? Oh, it's just Erica and Davy. Coulda fooled National Enquirer, though.

"Mommy, I need ice cream."

I'm Davy -- King of the Rock! And there's nothing you girls can do about it.

Sports Nut

Davy got to hang with Daddy at the Stake YM/YW canoeing trip along the Charles River a few weeks ago. Besides canoeing (which Davy wasn't able to do), they had soccer, football, volleyball, and plenty of other lawn sports that Davy fully involved himself in. He also helped himself to as much watermelon, hot dogs, cookies, and lemonade as he could handle (as did Daddy).

Davy was a charmer among the youth (when he wasn't interrupting their "big kids" games). At one point in the day, I found him sitting on a picnic blanket with a group of YW that Rachel used to teach in Activity Days. They were all feeding him cookies. Davy looked up at me and said, "Sit. Friends."

Who says toddlers can't multi-task? Watermelon and "lawn pool"? No problem.

The Yankees are recruiting early these days. Some youth leader apparently needs to remind the owner of this hat which stake of Zion they belong to. Sporting Yankee gear could be cause for disfellowship in some wards around here.

We're raising a lefty. He's got a wicked curve.

Are YOU ready for some football?

Tess

When I was 17 a beautiful horse came into my life. Her name was Tess. She loved jumping and galloping as much as I did. She had a wild spirit for me and a tender nature toward children and beginners. She taught me patience and showed me loyalty. She died today and was buried on the farm where we were both so happy. Thank you, Durrant family, for taking care of her and loving her.

Labor Day Weekend and Clam Bake

On Friday, Rachel and Davy went to the store for a few items for this weekend's Belmont 2nd Ward Annual Clam Bake. Davy was being so good throughout the trip, partially because Rachel had promised him a trip to Austin's house (a friend) when they were done. Unfortunately, the car battery (which had already been giving us a few problems) finally gave out in the store parking lot. A nice man from AAA came and saved the day, but it was too late to go to Austin's house, so Rachel asked Davy what he'd like to do. Davy's answer was very explicit: "Racket. Tennis ball. Hit."

Close your eyes. Now open your eyes. Where are you? You've traveled back in time to Labor Day at a scrumptious picnic with the friends your friends could be like.

What's in your hand? Back at him. He's got it -- it's a pink baseball mitt.

Okay, now back to this weekend. Yesterday was the ward clam bake that usually takes place at a picturesque New England beach but this year was changed to a wonderfully cool and shady park at Lake Cochituate. We shared a delicious lobster (no clams for us this year -- maybe next time) and a hamburger and hot dog for Davy.

The clam bake also includes the annual cookie bake-off in which a few ribbons are awarded to the best looking, best use of chocolate, fruitiest, family favorite, etc. Rachel won "Best Taste" with Mama Lambourne's chewy lemon cookie recipe. Thanks Grandma!

Cute Davy Moments

Cute Davy moments from the past week: The other day I was folding laundry with Davy "helping." He pulled out one of his shirts and pronounced, "Day-ee's cute shirt." (He has a hard time saying the 'v', so he says his name 'Day-ee.')

Then the next day we took a walk in the morning to a local park after seeing Collin off to work at the bus stop. A bee buzzed by Davy's stroller and Davy identified it as a bee. Then he turned around in his seat and told me, "Bees eat flowers." Close enough!

The other morning during breakfast, after Davy finished his Cheerios, he pointed to the freezer and said matter-of-factly, "I need ice cream." Yup, he belongs to this family, alright!

Davy takes a series of rests throughout the day. Well, he'll find a pillow and fall down on it saying "rest" with his cute little lisp. He'll stay still for two seconds, then bounce up and laugh hysterically. But he hates it when Mommy takes a rest--he'll come jump on me and try to pry my eyes open. I think that while it may be difficult to adjust to a new baby, once the baby is old enough to play he will love being a brother.

Dress Up

Davy has been discovering the joys of dressing up as someone else. His favorites are long, shiny, bead necklaces at Tara's house, the fireman hat from a previous post, a cowboy hat we found for Collin's Halloween costume, and a Nephite headband made from a scrap of fabric from Mom's project. Oh, and a blanket cape that had to be freshly tied on a thousand times one day, even though it was a very humid 90 degrees outside (and probably 80 inside with the air conditioner and fan going). He is figuring out how to do a lot of things by himself and his often repeated phrase is "I dit" meaning, "I did it."

Davy is incredibly into toys. He loves to play from the moment he wakes up till often after we put him in bed. And the first thing he says after "church" when we say we are going Sunday morning is "play . . . toys" then "friends" then lists his favorite nursery toys. Today we were sitting in Sacrament Meeting listening to testimonies and after every amen (there were more than usual) Davy popped his head up and said "toys?" He's a pretty good little player, too, learning the rules of friendship and nice play. The other afternoon he brought over a xylophone to my lap. He took a turn, then handed the mallet to me for "mama turn." This went back and forth for a while, then I was trying to play an actual song and didn't want to let go of the mallet. Davy looked at me and said, "share mama." I had the best laugh in a long time at that.
